  • How to care for your jewellery on holiday

The holiday season has well and truly begun. Here are some tips for maintaining your jewellery and keeping it secure while travelling.

Travel with Care

When packing your jewellery, place each piece in a separate compartment or pouch to prevent scratching or tangling. Consider using a jewellery organiser or a padded jewellery travel case to keep your pieces safe during travelling.

Avoid excessive heat and sun exposure

Excessive heat and direct sunlight can damage certain gemstones, fade colours, and weaken the settings of your jewellery. Avoid leaving your jewellery in hot environments, such as in a car or under direct sunlight for extended periods of time.

Take off jewellery during water activities

Remove your jewellery before swimming in pools, oceans, or engaging in water activities. Chloring and saltwater can corrode metals and damage certain gemstones. Additionally, water activities increase the risk of losing your jewellery.

Apply cosmetics and sunscreen before putting on jewellery

Avoid applying lotions, perfumes, sunscreen, or other cosmetic products directly onto your jewellery. These substances can build up on the surface of your jewellery, dulling its shine or causing discolouration.

Clean your jewellery regularly

Even on holiday, its essential to keep your jewellery clean. Gently clean your jewellery with a soft cloth to remove dirt, oils, and residues.

Store jewellery securely

When you are not wearing your jewellery, store it in a safe and secure place. Consider using a jewellery travel case or a pouch to prevent tangling, scratching, or loss. Avoid leaving your jewellery on countertops, in hotel rooms, or other easily accessible areas.

Be mindful of activities

Consider the activities you will be participating in and whether they could potentially damage your jewellery. Remove jewellery before engaging in activities such as sports, hiking, or rough outdoor adventures to minimise the risk of damage or loss.

Insure valuable jewellery

If you are travelling with expensive or sentimental jewellery, consider insuring it before your trip. This provides added protection and peace of mind in case of loss, theft, or damage.
