  • Tips and Tricks on how to keep your jewellery clean

Jewellery holds a special place in our hearts, serving as an expression of personal style, cultural significance, and cherished memories. From dazzling diamonds to intricate gold designs, jewellery is meant to shine!

However, over time, these pieces can lose their shine due to exposure to the environment, daily wear, and improper care.

  Regular Cleaning:

Make it a habit to clean your jewellery regularly to prevent dirt and grime from building up. The best way to keep your jewellery shining is to use a polishing dip and cloth which can be purchased in our retail store J G Rae’s in Lerwick. If you are unable to purchase these items using warm water and a polishing cloth (doesn’t need to be specifically for jewellery) work just as well. Soak the pieces of jewellery for a few minutes then pat dry with the polishing cloth and rub to give a streak free finish!

  Avoid Harsh Chemicals:

When cleaning your jewellery, avoid using harsh chemicals, such as bleach as they can damage precious metals and gemstones.

  Separate and Store Properly:

To prevent scratches and tangles, store your jewellery items separately. Use individual pouches, soft cloth bags, or a jewellery box with compartments to keep each piece safe and protected. This also helps to prevent the jewellery from getting tangled or damaged.

  Remove During Daily Activities:

Take off your jewellery when engaging in activities that may expose it to chemicals, moisture, or rough surfaces. Remove jewellery before swimming, exercising, or applying lotions, perfumes, or hairsprays. These activities can dull the shine and potentially damage the jewellery.

  Be Gentle:

Handle your jewellery with care to avoid unnecessary wear and tear. Careful when removing your jewellery, do it over a soft surface to prevent accidental drops or damage.

 Professional Cleaning:

Consider getting your jewellery professionally cleaned and inspected once or twice a year. At Shetland Jewellery our jewellers have the knowledge and tools to clean and restore your jewellery effectively. We can also check for loose stones, or other issues that may need attention.

 Be Mindful of Gemstones:

Gemstones are delicate and require extra care. Educate yourself about the specific care instructions for each gemstone in your jewellery collection to avoid accidental damage or ask us!
