It's never too early to talk about Christmas, and could there be a better Christmas gift than a sighting of the Northern Lights?
For me, definitely not. Last Christmas, on Boxing Day, Shetland was treated to one of the most spectacular aurora displays we’ve ever seen—bright, sweeping beams of colour dancing right across the night sky, visible from every corner of the isles.
This year marks our third limited edition Christmas tree decoration, and we felt it was finally time to create a piece inspired by the Mirrie Dancers. This range was the first Shetland Jewellery collection to introduce colour—born from a cold enamelling course I took at the Birmingham School of Jewellery with the brilliant Clare John in 2011. Learning to work with colour in this way transformed our designs, opening up a whole new world of creativity.
Back in the early days of the collection, I worked closely with our foreman at the time, Alan Georgeson, to find a way to replicate the drama of the aurora through vibrant colour. Since then, the Mirrie Dancers range has evolved; the colours are bolder and brighter now, but each piece is still individually hand-finished by our team, meaning no two are ever quite the same. So it felt only right that this magical range should be part of our festive collection. This year’s limited-edition Christmas tree decoration—just 100 made—features a Viking galley making its way through stormy winter seas, journeying toward brighter days. A nod to our Norse heritage and our love for Up Helly Aa.
A unique, meaningful gift—and a little northern light for your tree.
